Medical Device Company

Specialising in orthopedic devices the client wanted to create a show stopping workplace and demonstration laboratory space that would become their UK Headquarters and set a precedent for workplace innovation amongst their other offices worldwide.

Size

  • Medium (20,000 sq. ft)

Location

  • Solihull

The client was a global medical device company and leader in new product development and medical education in the orthopedic device industry. The project brief was to create a new high-tech laboratory and office space to establish a UK Flagship Headquarters, accommodating sales, marketing, commercial, medical education and business administration teams. In the laboratory area the client wanted to create a Cadaver Demonstration lab facility, incorporating a demonstration Specimen Wet Lab’ to accommodate up to 12 cadaver stations. The final design had to incorporate hospitality facilities including a customer hospitality café, staff canteen and a client suite area.

Conceptually linking people to the workplace

We loved the idea of “Link” as a concept as it relates to the clients core business in a number of ways; from an obvious perspective the client re-creates connections of body parts using their specialised devices and these procedures reconnect people to the lives they once enjoyed. Within the form of the architecture, we wanted to not only emphasize the organic nature of the clients logo, but also the organic nature of the human body. This was subtly hinted to within the ceilings, flooring and wall of the space while still keeping the look and feel of the clients global real estate guidelines.

HCAI Laboratory Design

The nature of the laboratory space was developed around health care associated infection and ultimately had to be designed with cleaning in mind. Suggested modifications to the existing building included additional drainage, a fall to the floor and floor loading modifications were required to accommodate the mortuary refrigeration unit. Moisture resistant tiles and covered skirting were applied to the main lab area and the final design included a metal pan ceiling.

Considerations for an exemplary client facing workplace

A number of ancillary spaces were included to accommodate visiting staff and clients, including the customer hospitality café, client facing changing and washroom facilities and a luggage room. These spaces were all accessed via the client demonstration suite which featured custom designed joinery for the display of products, tech bench touch points for device demonstrations and an impressive boardroom and meeting room suite and training rooms.
